TsAGI young scientists take part in Problems in Mechanics Conference

The delegation of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky (part of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) took part in the XV All-Russian School — Conference of Young Scientists “Problems in Mechanics: Theory, Experiment and New Technologies”. The event took place in Akademgorodok (Russian: Academic Town) of Novosibirsk and the village of Sheregesh, Kemerovo Region.
The conference discussed the latest results of experimental studies and numerical modeling obtained in the field of continuum and heterogeneous media mechanics, hydrodynamic instability, laminar-turbulent transition, gas dynamics, theory of impact and high-speed interaction of bodies, hydrogen energy, deformable solid mechanics, composite materials and nanostructures, as well as the arising computational problems and methods for their solution.
The center of aviation science, as TsAGI is called, presented 7 reports in the Hydro- and Gas Dynamics session. Thus, Semyon Nakrokhin, engineer of the Flight Dynamics and Aircraft Control Systems Complex, spoke about the air flow around a plate with a surface moving upstream. Elena Anokhina, engineer of the Aircraft and Rocket Aerodynamics Department, spoke about the verification method for a three-component mathematical model of a single-axis accelerometer to measure pitch and roll angles. Anastasia Klimova, engineer of the Strength, Loading and Aeroelasticity Standards Department, made the report “Numerical modeling of the buffeting-type aeroelastic phenomenon in subsonic flow”.
Alexey Troshin, senior researcher of the Propulsion Aerodynamics Department, presented an invited paper at the conference. He informed about the basics of various differential turbulence models, both using the Boussinesq’s hypothesis and differential Reynolds-stress models. Also, in his report, the advantages of the latter in various classes of flows were discussed, and the examples of setting up these models for sub- and supersonic flows were given.
Within the framework of the conference, a competition of reports for students and postgraduates was held. The second place was given to the fourth-year student of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology Alexander Kozik with the report “The method of measuring unsteady pitch and roll angles with a pendulum accelerometer in the presence of vibrations”, prepared in collaboration with the staff members of TsAGI: the head of the research laboratory of the Aircraft and Rocket Aerodynamics Department Anton Gorbushin and the head of the sub-department of the Aircraft and Rocket Aerodynamics Department Vyacheslav Yakushev. The scientific work presents a mathematical model of a single-axis pendulum accelerometer for measuring unsteady pitch and roll angles of aircraft models in wind tunnels in the presence of broadband vibrations. A method for determining the main parameters of an accelerometer using a vibration test rig was proposed and tested. The mathematical model was verified by the test results.
In addition, within the framework of the conference, with the support of the Primary Trade Union Organization of TsAGI and the Council of Young Scientists of Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS, the already traditional slalom competitions in alpine skiing and snowboarding were held. The winner’s stand in alpine skiing was completely occupied by TsAGI employees: Semyon Nakrokhin took the top spot, Anton Gorbushin was second, the head of the sub-department of TsAGI Aircraft and Rocket Aerodynamics Department Igor Bosnyakov — third. Anastasia Klimova won silver in snowboarding.
Problems in Mechanics: Theory, Experiment and New Technologies — is the annual All-Russian School-Conference of Young Scientists, which is jointly organized by Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS (ITAM), the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and Novosibirsk State University. In 2021, the event was held commemorating the centenary of ITAM Director (1976 — 1983), Hero of Socialist Labor, Laureate of USSR State Prizes, Academician Nikolay Yanenko.
