TsAGI takes part in IFAR Sustainable Aviation Workshop

25 March 2021

The research scientists of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky (part of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) took part in the IFAR Sustainable Aviation Workshop, which consisted of five sessions. The first one — Aircraft and Engines — took place in early March.

Head of the Sub-Department of TsAGI Aircraft and Rocket Aerodynamics Department Vitaly Gubsky, Ph.D., was the Chair of the online session and one of the speakers. He presented the achievements of the Institute in the field of creating green air transport. The work is being carried out under the programs for regional, mainline and transport aircraft development.

“We shared with our foreign colleagues our experience in developing light convertible aircraft configurations, a heavy ground-effect vehicle intended for container transportation, mainline aircraft with an overhead cryogenic tank, regional multi-rotor aircraft, etc. Another topic of discussion was the use of alternative fuels. I would like to note that the joint projects with the participation of TsAGI — FUTPRINT50 (Future Propulsion and Integration: towards a hybrid-electric 50-seat regional aircraft) and IMOTHEP (Investigation and Maturation of Technologies for Hybrid-Electric Propulsion) — were launched last year. I hope that our ideas will arouse the interest of foreign partners and will be implemented in joint projects,” said Vitaly Gubsky.

Along with TsAGI, representatives of such IFAR member organizations as CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Center), INTA (National Institute of Aerospace Technology of Spain), NASA (U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration), NLR (Royal Netherlands Aerospace Lab), ONERA (French Aerospace Research Center), DLR (German Aerospace Center), NRC (National Research Council of Canada), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), etc. took part in the workshop.

Foreign experts spoke about the fields of work under Clean Sky 2 and Horizon 2020 EU programs, in particular, about the progress of projects on the development of the composite wing and rotorcraft adaptive blade technology demonstrators, on the assessment of the aviation impact on air quality and human health in the vicinity of airports, air traffic management, etc.

Within the framework of the workshop, there were also sessions: Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Emissions, Air Traffic Management (ATM), Electrification, Certification. The presented projects include: low supersonic boom flight demonstration mission and sonic boom level assessment, hybrid and electric propulsion development, boundary layer control systems, hydrogen fuel cells in air transport, certification of advanced composite structures.

On March 12, at the Closing Plenary, IFAR Chairman, TsAGI Chief Scientific Officer, academician of the RAS Sergey Chernyshev concluded the workshop. He once again emphasized the importance of cooperation and exchange of information on promising research areas and the role of the IFAR Sustainable Aviation Working Group in bringing the world community closer to creating sustainable, affordable and fast air transport.

“This seminar is an excellent opportunity to be introduced to international projects that reflect the main trends in the development of world science and aircraft engineering. After all, our common goal is to create sustainable transport of the future,” noted Sergey Chernyshev.

IFAR (International Forum for Aviation Research) was founded in 2008. It is the world´s only aviation research establishment network. IFAR is established on a voluntary, non-binding basis and aims to enable the information exchange and communication on aviation research activities and main science and technology trends to ensure progress in aircraft engineering. IFAR has 26 member organizations, representing five continents, and approximately 35,000 researchers worldwide. TsAGI represents Russia in IFAR. In September 2019, at the 10th IFAR Summit, TsAGI Chief Scientific Officer, academician of the RAS Sergey Chernyshev was elected IFAR Chair for two years.
