TsAGI introduces new spin test facility

High-angle-of-attack flight may bring the aircraft to the stall point and, as a consequence, to the spin. To study these characteristics the aircraft models have wind tunnel tests with special installations that simulate critical modes by the angle-of-attack rotation and angle-of-slideslip sensing. At the end of 2018 the experimental base of the the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) was joined by a new spin test facility S-6 to study the aircraft’s aerodynamics at maneuverable flights.
The spin test facility S-6 is completely developed by TsAGI. It is designed to replace its predecessor, the S-4, which was put into operation in 1965 and served for the Institute for more than half a century. The main difference of the new spin test facility is the high accuracy of the model positioning: the precision does not exceed 0.01°. This is achieved by the using of DC series wound motors on neodymium magnets run by PID controllers. It provides a smooth start and moving, minimizing shock acceleration and vibration.
The new installation provides the change in the angle of attack in the range from 0° to 90° and in the slip angle within the limits of ± 30° at a speed of the model’s rotation of 2°/s. The S-6 also has two general inclinometer tools, which give the total deformation correction of experimental design at defined angular value. The S-6 can be operated by stand-alone computer and through the networks. “By using the spin testing facility we can test all kinds of aircraft: passenger liners, transport planes, fighter aircraft,” said Andrey Vyalkov, Head of Experimental Department of TsAGI’s Department of aerodynamics and dynamics of helicopters, spin dynamics and aircraft dynamics at high angle of attack. “In 2018 we tested check model and graduation of a perspective multichannel pneumatic probe using the spin test facility.”
