TsAGI holds conference on “Aircraft structural strength”

In December, the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after professor N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI, part of the National Research Center “Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky”) held the research Conference “Aircraft structural strength.”

The event opened with a plenary session where V.V. Vasilyev, the Deputy Chief Designer and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences presented a paper, “Aircraft composite reticular structures. Design and technological concept, design engineering, strength and applicability.” Also, urgent issues of Russian aircraft continued airworthiness in terms of structural strength were reported by M.S. Gromov, the Deputy Director General of the Aircraft Continued Airworthiness Research Center of the State Scientific Research Institute of Civil Aviation.

Mikhail Zichenkov, the Deputy Director General of TsAGI, in his report “TsAGI’s research of the aircraft structural strength,” revealed the topic of researching prospective structural layouts developed by the Institute’s specialists for non-conventional aircraft configurations: the “flying wing,” an aircraft with an oval body concept, a supersonic business airliner and others. As far as the aeroelasticity field is concerned, he singled out research on the system of helicopter rotor blade active control for the purpose of vibration reduction. In addition, Mikhail Zichenkov spoke about the influence of impact damage on the composite structural strength under loads, etc.

The event takes place twice a year on the Institute’s site. 5 planar reports, 42 sectional reports and 55 bench-related reports were made this time. The scientific convention gathered about 200 specialists from over 40 organizations and institutes, including: PJSC UAC, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company, Tupolev PJSC, Irkut Corporation PJSC, Kamov JSC, Open Joint Stock Company “Ilyushin Aviation Complex,” Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG, MIPT, MAI, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and others.

The specialists of TsAGI took the most active part in the conference. They shared their achievements in research of the following fields: strength calculation methods, metal composite structure calculation and test methods, aircraft strength and certification assurance, static and thermal strength, strength standards, aeroelasticity and loads, fatigue and survivability of the airframe, airframe monitoring and
non-destructive examination methods.

“As usual, our Conference deals with urgent issues and targets in the field of aircraft structure strength,” Mikhail Zichenkov explained. “Together with leading specialists and experts from design bureaus, industrial corporations and research institutes, we discussed the progress of various work, identified points of cooperation and assigned future priorities. It is in constructive meetings of this kind that contribute to achievement of good results and the creation of a necessary scientific and technical groundwork.”
