Mechanical Strength Test: The Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) will test the unique construction composite fin torsion box of the MS-21-300 aircraft

According to the experimental work plan on the MS-21-300 aircraft, the next unit — a composite fin torsion box — will be delivered to the Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky on December 22, 2014.

It has been developed by the Engineering Center named after A.S. Yakovlev of JSC “Irkut” Corporation (being a part of the United Aircraft Corporation — UAC), produced in ORPE “Technologiya” (a member of the holding company “RT-Chemcomposite” of the Rostec State Corporation ) and assembled according to the serial production technology at the “Aviastar-SP” factory.

The mechanical strength of the torsion box will be checked for its compliance to the Russian requirements of the Aviation Regulations by the experts of TsAGI. Earlier at the Institute, within the frameworks of the MS-21 program, the structurally similar samples and prototypes of the units made of composite materials were tested. Experimental results allowed verification of the estimation methods, and proved the accurate compliance of estimated data with experimental data.

Experimental studies of a fin will be carried out in three stages. At first the torsion box of the composite fin of the MC-21-300 will be tested for its strength under operational loads, in other words, real flight conditions will be created taking into account the properties dispersion of the materials. Then the unit will be sent to the Research and Development Center of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors Development in Turaevo, where the experiment imitating the collision with a bird will be carried out. Then the fin will be returned to the experimental facilities of TsAGI, where it will be tested for its residual strength taking into account possible damage during operations.

“Composite constructions, meeting the same safety and strength requirements as metal ones, are considered to be much more advantageous in terms of their weight. It will bring a certain economic benefit for carriers regarding both the fuel consumption, and the process of passengers or cargo transportation,” explained Alexander Dzyuba, the head of the Static and Thermal Strength Department of TsAGI.

Konstantin Popovich, the vice-president for aircraft engineering development of JSC “Irkut” Corporation, the director of the Engineering Center named after A.S. Yakovleva, notes that the composite fin torsion box is a unique construction for the Russian aircraft industry. Earlier in our country the load-bearing elements of such size made of composite materials have never been designed and produced.
